City & Bush TourEnjoy this full day tour showcasing our awesome city and rugged west coast.
Tour Description & Details
Join your guide for a fabulous introduction to New Zealand as he takes you around some of the choicest sights our biggest city has to offer in the morning, then out to the rainforests and rugged West Coast for the afternoon.
First up, your guide will collect you at your hotel and take you for a drive along the picturesque Waitemata waterfront to Mission Bay.
Passing the War Memorial Museum, you will have a short stop to see the Winter Gardens within the Auckland Domain (a 75-hectare volcanic park) then through the quirky suburb of Ponsonby you will travel over the Harbour Bridge to Mount Victoria or North Head in Devonport where you will have stunning views of the city and Rangitoto Island, and a chance to explore this area which was once used as a military position for an expected Russian invasion in the late 1800’s. It is here that you’ll find one of Devonport’s disappearing guns, one of only a few left in the world.
Returning from North Shore you will again have superb views of the City and Westhaven Marina which has almost two thousand berths, making it the largest marina in the Southern Hemisphere.
Leaving the hustle of central Auckland, we travel to the amazing natural habitat of the Waitakere Ranges, serene rainforests, and volcanic black sand beaches. First stop will be the Arataki Centre which nestles high up in the Ranges offering expansive panoramic views to the Manukau Harbour in the South and the Waitemata Harbour in the North. Here we can sit down for a packed lunch and learn about the unique fauna and flora of this Regional Park, and the significance of the huge Māori totem that guards the Centre.
After lunch, we take an easy walk into the lush rainforest where you’ll be surrounded by giant tree ferns and pristine streams tinkling through the wilderness. You will also get to see some of New Zealand’s famous giant Kauri trees, the history of which your guide will tell you all about.
Moving a little further west, your guide will take you down to a spectacular black sand beach at Karekare – this is where a haunting scene from the movie “The Piano” was filmed! To end the day, a short walk up from this beach your guide will reveal the magical beauty of the Karekare Falls, a little-known gem where you can swim in the cool waters of the pool and get some wonderful photos for your album!
Further west you will reach a high point that was used in days gone by as a World War II radar station (now a navigation beacon), to detect enemy planes approaching over the Tasman Sea. A track begins here and makes its way along the top of the highest sea cliffs in the Auckland region providing spectacular views north towards Muriwai and south to Whatipu. The chance of seeing a good sunset here is excellent!
